Amy Stevens

Amy Stevens is a Surrey based textile designer and maker whose work explores the wonder of our natural surroundings, fragile details and the interaction of colour and light. Amy blends traditional heritage techniques with experimental ideas and methods to capture fine details in her work utilising all the knowledge from her first-class Textile Design degree and close work with Heritage Mills. With an emphasis on creating beautiful things to enjoy, Amy is still learning and exploring within her craft, finding joy within her practice which she hopes can be absorbed by those who admire her work.

I am a textile maker whose work mostly explores my natural surroundings or imagery from my childhood memories or photography from the past. Through my practice, I seek to transport people through textiles using colour and structure to represent moments in time. I do this by exploring traditional hand weaving combined with dye and print to create fine fibre textiles for a variety of functional purposes as well as art pieces. My projects often develop into explorations of craftsmanship, delving into technical structures of weave or warp dyeing and breakdown prints. Textiles capture our memories through life, as we live our past and new experiences within textiles. My aspiration is to create new textiles that can be passed down generations. Each piece is created by crafting hand woven fabrics mostly of silk and linen which I screen print onto before and after the weaving process, to give different clarity of image between the pieces. Helping us to reflect on the fragility of our memories.

This exhibition has provided a new platform for my work as I start my journey into the design industry, to showcase my work alongside other contemporary artists is such a privilege. My goals for the future involve establishing Scrapbook Studio as a textile business and collaborative studio which can expand to support other young designers into the industry.
