Hanyi Feng
Hanyi Feng is an object and jewellery maker from China, completed her studies in jewellery at the School of Jewellery, Birmingham City University in 2023. She is currently an Artist in Residence at SoJ, based in Birmingham. Hanyi’s work has been showcased at many international jewellery and silversmithing fairs and exhibitions, she has also been selected for Talent – Master of the Future 2025. She works with a variety of materials, fusing different surfaces and textures. Both jewellery and objects serve as embodiments of emotional and behavioural reflections, visualizing the flowing mind and moment.
The motivation for this series was sparked by Hanyi's early experience with Tourette Syndrome. There is a lack of public understanding, leading people to question why someone might behave in an unconventional way. This response and prejudice heighten a sufferer's self-awareness, resulting in anxiety and stress.
She realized that crocheting had gradually become a therapeutic activity for regulating stress levels and alleviating symptoms. Inspired by this, she created a jewellery series using the wire crochet technique, incorporating soft fibres to provide diverse tactile sensations and emotional comfort.
Each piece is formed through an unconscious flow of crocheting, with a mindful focus on every stitch and the ritualistic act of healing. These works embody self-soothing and stress relief, transforming into new forms of companionship in daily life.
