Layla

Layla Yuanxing Lin is a London-based metal artist whose work is defined by an innovative approach to wire-working. After completing her studies at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art, Layla has focused on developing a distinctive body of work centered around woven wires. Her artistry is deeply rooted in her ongoing exploration of women’s craft traditions which serve as the foundation for her creations.

Surafacing The Crack is a set of textile-inspired metal works. Each wire is woven by my hands, then intricately interlaced, soldered, and fused into fragmented, delicate surfaces. Through a process that blends craftsmanship with raw expression, the techniques like raising, hammering, and stretching are all applied to transform this fragile 'fabric'—a shimmering skeleton of metal—into a form that is both forged and fractured. The act of weaving becomes a metaphor for resistance, a quiet rebellion that threads through the very essence of my practice, channeling the spirit of women who refuse to be defined by the confines of expectation.

Occurring in the gap between the visible and the invisible, a crack is then surfaced by our eyes. Roaming between the void of reality and imagination, a ghost of the forgotten soul is then recognised. My practice aims to critique, reflect and question the authenticity of empowered decoration by unveiling its skeleton using the technique of weaving to construct and deconstruct things simultaneously.
