Rachel Ruiyi Wang

Ruiyi Wang is a Shanghainese artist and maker based in London. Her artistic practice is characterised by innovation, humour, and a profound fascination with everyday objects. Motivated by a persistent interest in applied art, Ruiyi completed her BA in Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martins and MA in Jewellery and Metal at the Royal College of Art, before pursuing her silversmith training at Bishopsland. Her experiences also include working on fashion jewellery for designer brands in Shanghai and exhibiting her contemporary artwork in London, Chicago, Porto and Munich.

Throughout my art practice, inspiration from daily objects has been my major source of creativity. I have developed a unique approach to conveying my observations of the world around me. Rooted in ordinary daily life, I aim to establish a strong connection between the audience and my works. 


The core value of my work lies in my ability to uncover overlooked aspects of common things. My current focus revolves around deconstructing and reconstructing human culture, conveying my thoughts through objects placed in a domestic setting. 

By employing the movement of cutlery approaching the food itself, I symbolise our innate appetite. Inspired by animal hunting, I devise more vivid ways for the cutlery to mimic predatory behaviour, as if they are preying on the food. In contrast with the composed demeanour of individuals adhering to various table manners, such as waiting for the camera shutter to click, the untamed anthropomorphic actions of the cutlery plays a metaphor for our true nature. 


By incorporating and manipulating retired crockery supplied by a Michelin restaurant, I set up a stage of fine dining for the cutlery to improvise. Disregarding the customary rules of table manners, the cutlery preys on food out of instinct.
