Yu-Ching Chen

I am a Taiwanese craft designer and artist based in London, dedicated to creating pieces that merge functionality with artistic expression. Drawing inspiration from everyday surroundings and the organic beauty of nature, my work explores the balance between structure and fluidity. With a deep appreciation for materials and craftsmanship, I handcraft each piece to reflect simplicity, purpose, and emotional connection. My designs aim to evoke a sense of place and memory, transforming ordinary objects into meaningful experiences. Through my practice, I strive to push the boundaries of craft and design, creating works that resonate both visually and functionally.

My work explores the emotional and narrative power of materials, creating timeless pieces that bridge past and present. Rooted in traditional craftsmanship and contemporary aesthetics, I craft designs that preserve personal and collective memories through form and material. I am deeply inspired by the natural world, particularly its rhythms and organic structures, which influence both my artistic approach and design philosophy.

Through meticulous handcrafting, I seek to create objects that hold meaning beyond their physical form—works that resonate on a sensory and emotional level. The interplay of structure and openness, form and void, allows my pieces to engage with their surroundings, creating a dialogue between material, space, and memory. I believe that craftsmanship is more than a technical skill; it is a language through which we tell stories, connect with history, and shape new experiences.

By embracing both traditional techniques and modern design principles, my work blurs the line between function and sculpture, offering a deeper reflection on the relationship between people, objects, and place.
